Insurance solutions for fitness professionals

Annual cover from $190*

Public liability, professional indemnity and products liability cover for personal trainers, fitness professional, gyms and fitness studios.

Why fitness professionals in Australia need public liability insurance

Every fitness business deals with people and physical activity – and that comes with risk. A client might trip over a mat, a mirror could break, or a member might get injured using equipment. Even a minor accident could result in a costly claim.

Public liability cover can help protect you if someone claims they were injured or their property was damaged while at your gym or the gym where you conduct your fitness professional activies from. It can also cover the cost of legal defence and compensation if required.

We highly recommend you consider insurance for personal trainers (or PT insurance). Personal trainers should consider insurance to protect themselves and their clients. While not required legally to operate your PT business, you may be required to show evidence that you are insured as part of your contract with clients or business partners (e.g. to operate out of a premises).

Given the risk of personal injury is high in personal training, insurance should be considered to help protect your business, livelihood, employees (if you have them) and clients.

As a minimum you should consider the following types of cover:

  • Public liability: Covers personal trainers if a client is injured or suffers property damage as a result of your actions. It can also cover legal fees if you are sued by a client.
  • Product liability: Covers personal trainers if a client is injured or suffers damage due to a product you sell or provide (supplements or fitness equipment).
  • Professional indemnity: Covers personal trainers if a client claims that they were harmed as a result of advice or guidance you gave them.

However, you may need other types of cover depending on your circumstances, for example, if you rent or own a commercial space or studio to run your business, or you have a separate business vehicle. It’s a good idea to talk to a broker who can help you work out what insurance you need.

Most gyms need public liability and professional indemnity insurance, plus optional property and contents cover.

Different factors may influence the cost of insurance, such as:

  • The services you provide
  • The size of your company
  • Your annual revenue.

When requesting a quote, you should ensure the declared value of your business is accurate so you get the correct premium and cover for your business.

It’s not mandatory by law, but most landlords and councils make it a condition of operation.

Owners of gyms and fitness studios should have public liability insurance to operate. But it’s best practice to also have professional indemnity insurance.

Marsh can arrange $10 million or $20 million public liability and $10 million professional indemnity cover.
