What is Jewellers Block insurance?

Jewellers Block insurance is designed for jewellery businesses that handle valuable stock, customers’ goods and other business assets.

Depending on your policy and schedule, cover can include stock and merchandise, cash and negotiable documents at the insured premises and elsewhere within the stated territorial limits. It can also cover other business contents and certain damage to premises by thieves.

Some risks have specific limits or require optional extensions, including public exhibitions, home risk, unattended vehicles and overseas transit. The policy wording and schedule set out the cover, limits, conditions and exclusions that apply.

Goods in trust

Cover can apply to stock entrusted to dealers, customers in the trade, repairers, cutters and brokers, subject to the policy terms and limits.

Travellers and delivery

Stock may be covered while carried by you, your representatives, travellers, agents, messengers and delivery staff, subject to policy conditions.

Sendings

Cover may apply from the time goods are accepted by the carrier until they are delivered to the consignee, subject to policy terms and limits.

Cash and negotiable documents

Cover can include cash and negotiable documents used in the business, subject to the limits shown in the schedule.

Hold-up and robbery

Cover can respond to loss or damage to insured property by robbery at the premises, subject to the applicable limit shown in the schedule.

Cover for business contents

Cover can include trade and office furniture, fixtures, fittings, machinery, plant, safes, alarm systems, tenants’ decorations and improvements, subject to the policy.

Damage to premises by thieves

Cover can apply to certain damage to the premises or landlord’s fixtures and fittings caused by burglars, housebreakers or thieves, including attempted theft.

Specified insured events

Business contents can be covered for specified events, including fire, burglary, theft, storm, flood, water damage, earthquake, and malicious damage.

Safes and alarm systems

Safes and alarm systems are included within the policy’s description of other business contents, subject to applicable terms, conditions, and limits.

Optional extensions

Some protections are optional and apply only where included in the schedule. Availability, limits, conditions and any additional premium depend on the extension.

Unattended motor vehicles

An optional extension may cover valuables in an unattended vehicle, subject to limits and security requirements. Restrictions apply outside normal business hours.

Overseas transit

verseas transit may be available where the sending or trip is advised to and accepted by the insurer, and the applicable additional premium is paid.

Other optional extensions

Other optional extensions include fusion, glass, stolen or forged cheques, demolition and clearance, and certain theft of customers’ goods held for repair or alteration.

Frequently asked questions

The policy can cover property entrusted to the insured, subject to its terms, limits and exclusions. Goods entrusted solely for safe custody are excluded under the supplied wording.

Cover may apply while stock is carried by you, authorised representatives or delivery staff, subject to policy conditions. Personal custody requirements apply, and carrier sendings may be covered until delivery to the consignee.

Overseas transit is an optional extension. The relevant trip or sending must be advised to and accepted by the insurer, with the applicable additional premium paid.

Public exhibition cover may be available where the extension is included in the schedule and agreed by the insurer. Security and storage conditions also apply.

Home Risk may be available as an optional extension, with locked-safe requirements when goods are unattended. Unattended vehicle cover is also optional and subject to limits, security requirements and restrictions.

The policy generally excludes insured property while being worn or used by specified people. Limited exceptions apply, including watches worn for testing and property up to AUD 5,000 in total at any one time.

The policy includes conditions relating to safes, display windows, locked showcases, alarms and protection equipment. Relevant safe and alarm keys must also be removed from the premises when the business is closed.

Stock claims use the valuation basis shown in the schedule, or historical cost price if none is shown. You may also need to provide purchase, sales and other stock records to support a claim.

Examples include mysterious disappearance, certain stocktaking shortages, invalid payments, goods held solely for safe custody and certain damage while property is being worked on. Other exclusions also apply.
