Truck and heavy vehicle insurance solutions

Help protect your trucks, cargo and operations with insurance arranged for transport businesses, from commercial motor and liability to cargo and downtime cover.

Do I really need insurance for my truck or heavy vehicle?

Truck and heavy vehicles are exposed to unique risks. Being on the road, the specialist nature of the goods you transport, and the high value of your trucks themselves means that commercial vehicle insurance may not be enough to cover your truck or your fleet.

Say your concrete agitator truck breaks down on your way to a construction site, and the concrete solidifies. The agitator bowl will have to be discarded and a new one installed. The load of concrete that can no longer be used creates additional costs.

Or, your powder truck delivers a mix of ingredients to the wrong silo. The silo must be drained and ingredients replaced.

Or one of your load restraints breaks, and your load spills onto the road. The road will have to be closed and cleared, with associated clean-up and traffic management costs.

Our truck insurance solutions can help cover the costs of clean-up, repairs and replacement. Motor vehicle and public liability cover are industry ‘must haves’ for all truck and heavy vehicle businesses.

We can also arrange additional insurance cover to suit your business, including:

  • Downtime cover
  • Personal accident and illness
  • Goods in transit
  • Non-owned trailer-in-control
  • NTI Accident Assist (roadside assist) (concrete trucks only).

What insurance should I consider for my trucking business?

Public liability insurance is strongly recommended for truck and heavy vehicle operators. You certainly might need it, but this cover alone may not adequately protect you, your drivers or damaged vehicles.

Packages we recommend often include:

  • Truck and vehicle insurance
  • Public liability insurance
  • Goods-in-transit insurance.

Our specialised transport team can help provide you with tailored protection – so you can stay focused on your business.

What’s covered?

  • Commercial motor

Can cover accidental loss or damage to insured vehicles, theft and certain third-party liabilities, subject to the cover selected. Flat or capped excess - depending on where you live and what you carry. We offer a choice of repairer, substitute hire vehicle, and more.
  • Public and products liability

Can cover certain third-party personal injury or property damage liabilities connected with your business or products. Up to $20 million cover, or more, depending on your contract requirements.
  • Cargo in transit

Carriers Protect can cover cargo lost or damaged in transit, with cover depending on the option and extensions selected.
  • Downtime

Can pay a weekly benefit when an eligible loss or damage claim for your vehicle is accepted under the Commercial Motor policy.
  • “Agreed value’ cover

Depending on what you carry, not market value – so you know the amount of cover you have.
  • Concrete truck solidification cover

Due to ancillary power failure (mechanical or electrical breakdown).

What’s not covered

Truck insurance does not cover every event or circumstance. Exclusions can include depreciation, wear and tear, certain mechanical, electrical or electronic events, and faulty workmanship.

Cover can also be affected where a vehicle is unsafe or unroadworthy, is driven by someone who is not appropriately licensed or is affected by drugs or alcohol, or where the vehicle or load exceeds applicable design, weight or dimension limits.

Other exclusions, limits and conditions apply. Check your policy wording, schedule and endorsements to understand the cover that applies to your business.

Frequently asked questions

Truck insurance is designed for heavy vehicles and transport businesses. Depending on the cover selected, it can address risks involving your vehicle, third-party liabilities, cargo and downtime. Your policy schedule confirms which covers, limits and endorsements apply.

Depending on your business, you may consider Commercial Motor, Public and Products Liability, Carriers Protect and Downtime. These are separate policy products or cover options. Cover only applies where it is selected and shown in your policy schedule.

Not necessarily. Under the Transport Pack, Public and Products Liability is a separate policy product. It applies when selected and shown in your policy schedule, subject to its terms, conditions, limits and exclusions.

Carriers Protect can provide cover for eligible cargo that is lost or damaged in transit. The cover that applies depends on the option and extensions selected and shown in your policy schedule.

Downtime can pay a nominated weekly benefit when an eligible loss or damage claim for your vehicle has been accepted under the Commercial Motor policy. Policy conditions and exclusions apply.

The Transport Pack allows you to choose a repairer, or the insurer can recommend one. If your choice is not accepted, you will need to work with the insurer to agree on another repairer.

Under the concrete agitator scheme, cover can apply where concrete sets or hardens following a specified mechanical, electrical or electronic breakdown of ancillary operating equipment. Applicable maintenance requirements and other policy conditions must also be met.

The concrete agitator scheme can cover reasonable substitute hire vehicle costs following eligible accidental damage or theft. Limits and conditions apply, including where Downtime cover also applies.

The Transport Pack includes provisions for an eligible non-owned trailer in your lawful custody or control while it is used in connection with your business. Limits, excesses and other policy conditions apply.

Factors can include your claims history, vehicle type and use, location, sum insured, operating distance and the cover or extensions selected. Cargo, liability and business information can also affect the premium where those products are selected.

When arranging the concrete truck insurance product, Marsh Advantage Insurance Pty Ltd (ABN 31 081 358 303, AFSL 238 369) acts under binding authority on behalf of NTI Limited (ABN 84 000 746 109, AFSL 237246) and not on your behalf.
